For the traveler The Riviera Maya is a place with great attration beginig with its archeology, beautiful beaches, its reef and most importantly its people!
The riviera maya begins south of Cancun and ends in a small village called Punta Allen, within a vast biosphere reserve between these two points there are towns of different styles and sizes. Each one with its own particular personality, as well as multiples bays and solitary beaches: Puerto Morelos, Playa Paraiso, Playa del secreto, Punta Maroma, Punta Bete, Xcalacoco, Calica, Paamul, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Kantenah, Akumal, Chemuyil, Xcacel, Xel- Ha, Tulum , Coba, Bocapaila y Punta Allen
Tulum is located 100 Kms South of Puerto Morelos on the route 307. It is the only walled Mayan ruin located in front of the Caribbean sea.
RUINS: Frescoes dating back 500 years are still visible on the interior walls of the several temples.Tulum was considered to be one of the most important political, religious and ceremonial centers on the coast.
A magic door to another world: Along the whole Mayan Riviera starting from Puerto Morelos , different sinkholes "Cenotes" of sweet and crystalline water are located. Perfect for snorkel and diving of caverns or only to swim and to enjoy the mother's nature gift.
Created thousands of years ago by rain water which filtered through the limestone surface, these rivers have become, with time, a subterranean paradise. Caverns and vaults with impressive rock formations, are found throughout these water filled tunnels. Experts believe that during the Ice Age, when the water levels went down, rain filteres through the ground dragging minerals from soil to create thousands of stalagmites in the empty caverns. The melting of the poles caused water levels to rise , ultimately flooding these underground caverns and tunnels.
"Cenotes" were sacred to the Maya, they considered the entrance to the spiritual underworld and provided the only source of fresh water in the jungle.
